The power of the wind, sea and people!

Our latest Wildlife Watch meeting was held during an extremely brisk easterly wind on Slapton National Nature Reserve, blowing straight off the sea! It didn’t put any of our intrepid Watchers off though, and after being mesmerised by the crashing waves which were surging up to the Middle Car Park, we crossed the road to a slightly more sheltered spot where we got stuck in cutting back gorse.

Everyone worked extremely hard and cleared a fantastic area, scalloping it to allow the light to get to different parts at different times of the day and thereby encouraging a greater diversity of plant species and therefore the invertebrates and birds that will follow. We all enjoyed the warmth of a hot chocolate brewed on the storm kettles, using gorse which was great at lighting them and keeping them going – and the biscuits helped keep us going too!

Many thanks to all the families who worked so hard, we’ll come back later in the coming year to see the difference we’ve made. Thanks too to Jack and Emily who came to help us from Devon Wildlife Trust and to the great donation of a box of work gloves from one of our members.

Next month: Seaton Jurassic – we can’t wait! If you’d like to know more about or come along to Kingsbridge Wildlife Watch Group please contact Clare on watch.sl@field-studies-council.org
